Welcome to the Ottawa West Dental Hygiene Study Club. The goal of this study club is to offer exceptional, unbiased educational opportunities for dental hygienists in the West of Ottawa.

Thursday January 25, 2018, 6-8pm

Dr. Haissam Dahan -The role of dentistry in treating sleep apnea

Dr. Dahan completed his Bachelors of Science degree from Carleton University and Doctor of Dental Surgery from McGill University in 2005. He practiced general dentistry in Ottawa for five years while also completing a Masters in Dental Science degree during that time.His interest in facial pain management and sleep dentistry lead him to leave his dental practice and complete a clinical fellowship in orofacial pain at the world-renowned Massachusetts General Hospital located in Boston. While there, he was a part-time clinical instructor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Following graduation, he moved back to Ottawa to start his private practice and has been awarded a hospital position at the Montreal General Hospital, where he is the only dentist that is allowed to treat facial pain. Dr. Dahan is a published author, and has lectured at Harvard University, Tufts University and McGill University. He is involved in the teaching of students and residents at McGill University. Although quite busy, Dr. Dahan is also currently completing a PhD in facial pain at McGill University.Dr. Dahan is honoured to be opening his TMJ & Sleep Dentistry Centre in his hometown of Ottawa. He hopes to be able to provide a service to the Ottawa community using evidence-based approaches.

Lisa Kopil - Understanding Stress, Wellness and Patient Anxiety

Lisa Kopil is a certified Life and Stress Management Coach, speaker and workshop facilitator who been exploring self-improvement and wellness for over 25 years. She is passionate about helping others understand how stress and anxiety affect our physical, emotional and mental health and how to change that stress from the inside out. She works with clients’ one-on-one, facilitates workshops, holds regular drop in sessions and is writing a children’s book.Lisa works with a variety of modalities including meridian tapping, meditation, inner exploration, energy work, sound therapy, Neuro Linguistic Programming, visualizations and the Law of Attraction.She had many life roles in life from ESL teacher, Business administration and management, stay- at home parent, musician, artist and small business owner. She currently lives in the village of Fitzroy Harbour where she manages her coaching practice and spends time connecting with others through music in a duet and local band.

Dr. Nita Scherer - otolaryngology, head and neck surgery - Hôpital Montfort
– An overview of ENT in Ottawa

Dr. Scherer practices general otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, with an interest in salivary gland and thyroid surgical disease, non-syndromic pediatric disease and ear disease. She graduated from the University of Western Ontario with both a BSc in Science with Distinction (1994), and Doctor of Medicine (MD) (1998). She was then accepted to the otolaryngology, head and neck surgery residency training program at the University of Ottawa (1998-2003). She is both a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (2003) and a Diplomat of American Board of Otolaryngology (2004). She continues to pursue educational activities to further enhance her knowledge and provide better care to her patients.Dr. Scherer has been appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, and is actively involved with the undergraduate medical education program at the university. She has been the Director of the Mandatory Selectives clerkship rotation at the University since 2010, and supervises many of our Francophone medical students and the otolaryngology residents through their clinical training programs.She holds privileges at Hôpital Montfort, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, The Ottawa Hospital and St. Vincent’s Hospital. Furthermore, she enjoys being part of the otolaryngology team that travels to Nunavut to provide services at the Qikiqtani General Hospital in Iqaluit.

Dr. Sandra Chong - The Long-Term Periodontal Patient

We will address the role of the general practice and a periodontal practice in maintaining the long- term periodonal patient. What can we offer? How do we work together? How is this a win for the patient?
